For us Brits skiing in America has been on a steady decline since its heyday back in the mid 90s. At one time we even had charter flights operating in and out of Denver but that seems like a lifetime ago now. Back then Brits were skiing in Colorado, California, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and the states on the East Coast. It is such a pity as America has so many excellent ski resorts and such great snow but the exchange rate and contraction within the aviation industry just got too much for the British market.
The state of Colorado established itself as the main attraction for the Brits with Vail and Aspen competing neck and neck for the flagship resort status and attracting the jetset and well healed. Both resorts have fantastic skiing, large ski areas, long seasons and truly top end accommodation options. The gated resort of Beaver Creek, although extremely expensive, made no attempt to compete in the Vail/Aspen dog fight, its attraction has always been from keeping its exclusivity and flying just under the radar. Resorts of a more affordable nature in Colorado include Breckenridge, Keystone, Winter Park, Copper Mountain, Telluride, and Crested Butte.
Outside of Colorado and on the Nevada/California border sit a collection of ski resorts that surround the shores of Lake Tahoe of which Heavenly and Squaw Valley are the most famous. Other resorts include Northstar, Alpine Meadows, Sugar Bowl, and Kirkwood amongst others.
Salt Lake City, Utah is known as Ski City and for good reason. Within around 40 minutes you hit your first resort and all resorts are easy to access from SLC. These included Park City, The Canyons, Snowbird, Alta (skiers only- no boarders!), Deer Valley (skiers only – no boarders!) and Brighton, and Solitude. This is an amazing area for a two week holiday as all of the mountains offer something different.
Gateway airports include Denver, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and Boston with internal flights to Aspen, Boseman, Reno, and Albuquerque to name but a few.
