Ski Holidays Spain

We always think of Spain as a destination for summer holidays in the sun drinking an estrella and eating tapas. Spain actually has some sizable winter sport resorts and with the exception of Sierra Nevada in the most southern Andalucia all the others are in the northern Pyrenees. Atmosphere is the Spanish resorts is laid back with a manana-esque vibe. Many skiers party late and get up late so for powder hounds looking for fresh tracks this can be a bonus.

Sierra Nevada is positioned just north east of Malaga and can have an erratic snow record so booking late is recommended when you know the snow is there. This can be a really competitively priced ski option as flights into Malaga are low season in the winter, as is car hire so bargains can be found.

Baqueira-Beret is the most famous spanish resort with over 160km of piste and having the patronage of the Spanish royal family. The season here is decent too with a good altitude of slopes and a modern lift system.

Cerler has 85km of piste, Formigal has 140km, and La molina/Masella known as Alp 2500 has 140km of piste. Most of the other resorts feature around 40-60km of piste but in all there are over 30 ski resorts in Spain. Just looking at the stats for Spain’s top 5 resorts it’s pretty punchy and it’s a wonder that more Brits do not ski here. Living in these ‘Brexi-Covid’ days with tightened purse strings I’ll go out on a limb and say that I believe this will be a growth market in the next few years. Watch this space.
