As Austria’s highest resort, Obergurgl is pretty much guaranteed snow for the duration of the ski season. While the resort has a great variety of off-piste terrain making it a popular destination for freeriders and powder skiers, it’s also set up for beginners and intermediate skiers to have fun across the whole area: the Rosskar, Hohe Mut, Festkogl (Obergurgl), and the Wurmkogel (Hochgurgl). So, if you’re after queue free modern lifts to take you out onto the wide open pistes where you can carve up the fresh powder, or simply up to the nursery slopes, Obergurgl delivers every time. Book lessons at the Obergurgl ski school, try your hand at night skiing, tobogganing, or simply explore the mountain.
As a small resort, Obergurgl has a more intimate atmosphere that other resorts, and with a community of locals working in the resort rather than out of town seasonaires, expect lederhosens, beer steins and traditional Austrian hospitality. When the lifts stop running, head to the famous après ski bar Nederhütte, located halfway up the mountain, where the band will actively encourage you to dance on the benches. Back in the village, go to the traditional Austrian pub Josl Keller for live music and dancing.
There are lots of places to eat in Obergurgl, a few recommendations include: Zirben Alm, a traditional Austrian restaurant in the heart of the village offering hearty dishes such as goulash and schnitzel, accompanied by breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Slope side, well actually, at the highest point in the ski resort at 3,030 meters, Top Mountain Star offers stunning panoramic views of the Ötz valley Alps up to the Dolomites.
Want to try something different away from the slopes? Go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in the surrounding countryside. Take a sleigh ride through the snowy meadows. Visit the ice skating rink in the village. Go shopping in the village boutiques. Or for a truly memorable ski holiday, book a helicopter ride or why not treat your loved one to a champagne gondola lunch?
Ski holidays in Obergurgl begin almost immediately with a quick 1.5 hour transfer from Innsbruck airport. Once in resort there’s a free resort bus (if you have a lift pass) to shuttle you around.
