If it’s a small, exclusive ski resort in the Austrian Alps, with one of the largest and most snow-sure ski areas in Austria you’re after, then it has to be Lech ski resort. Lech ski resort is located in the Arlberg ski region, and is renowned for its stunning scenery, challenging slopes, and luxurious accommodations. While there are also some good beginner slopes in Lech, the ski terrain here is best suited for good intermediates and advanced skiers. The resort has a variety of runs, from long, winding pistes to steep bowls, not to mention the incredible, yet challenging, off piste skiing. If you’re looking for a luxurious yet challenging ski holiday in Austria, then Lech is the perfect place for you.

Lech’s reputation as a world-class ski destination is well-deserved. With its snow-covered peaks, charming village setting, and endless amenities, it’s no wonder this resort stands out among the rest. For avid skiers and snowboarders, Lech offers a diverse range of slopes catering to all skill levels. There are a few gentle slopes for beginners and families with young children, but the majority of the runs are better suited to good intermediates. If you’re competent, you’ll find the perfect trail here. Even better, the slopes are never overcrowded – when the Lech ski resort has sold the day’s 14,000 tickets, it closes its gates. Fancy venturing further afield? With recent investment in the region’s ski infrastructure, the whole Arlberg ski area (that’s 305km of piste, including St Anton, Zürs, and Warth-Schröcken), is now connected via a series of fast gondolas. Fancy trying your hand at heli skiing? It’s actively encouraged here. For boarders, the Lech ski resort is really set to impress. As one of Europe’s great snowboarding centres, boarders have access to an 80 metre half pipe, a dedicated fun park, and a boardercross course packed full of tricky obstacles. There are lots of ski schools to choose from, but word to the wise – book ski school in advance of peak weeks.
While Lech isn’t known for its wild après ski scene, there are still a few options for those who are looking to party, just manage your expectations as the après ski scene is generally more relaxed and sophisticated than in some other resorts. Slope side you have Schlegelkopf, a popular spot for après ski with a sun terrace and live music. Eisbar, a small bar with a frozen bar top and a cool atmosphere. Or if you just want a low-key après ski experience, you can always enjoy a drink in one of the many restaurants or bars in the village.
With so many great restaurants to choose from you’re never far from great food in Lech. A few recommendations include: Griggeler Stuba, in the Burg Vital Resort in Oberlech, is a fine dining restaurant with 3 Gault Millau toques. Alter Goldener Berg, again in Oberlech, is a traditional Austrian restaurant with a cosy atmosphere. Or for a dining experience on the slopes, it has to be Rud-Alpe, a traditional mountain restaurant located on the Schlegelkopf mountain, above Lech.
In addition to skiing, Lech also offers a variety of other winter activities, such as snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in the surrounding area. Take a sleigh ride through the snow-covered countryside. Go ice skating at the outdoor rink in Oberlech. Take a hot air balloon ride over the surrounding mountains. Try paragliding or hang gliding. Visit the Christmas markets in Lech and Zürs, which are open from late November to December.
The transfer time from the nearest airports to Lech is approximately 2 hours 20 minutes by train from Zurich Airport, and 2 hours 40 minutes by train from Innsbruck Airport.
